Finish What You Started is a project I created in 2009 after touring all over Canada with two of my old punk bands and organizing tons of punk shows in Ottawa. Punk and hardcore has made a huge impact on my life and shown me to a worldwide community of like-minded people who are trying to make a positive change in the world. It’s offered me an outlet of expression, introduced me to life changing ideas and given me the opportunity to do and see some righteous stuff. Wanting others to have those same experience's I've had, I decided to create Finish What You Started to support bands, artists, and projects that embody the same values and energy that attracted me into punk and hardcore, and to simply engage others to make a positive change in themselves, and in the world around them. - Jeff
Finish What You Started is made up of primarily a record label. We are dedicated to helping hard working, and amazingly talented bands develop, grow and live a dream. If that dream is to thrash out around town, or tour the world in a beat up old van, playing basement shows, we want to help make those dreams a reality. We give all of the bands in our family the professional and directional support needed, and provide our personal knowledge and contacts we have gained through many years of being involved in the independent punk, hardcore and music community to help them aspire and push forward. We try to nourish our local scene by working primarly with bands in and around our local community because this is the city we live in, work and have the most understanding of. We encourage people to take control of their local scenes and be productive! Just as others encouraged us to do. We do not purport to represent the entire community in Ottawa. We are one of several independent labels who collectively make up the Ottawa underground.
On top of being a record label, we want to promote YOUTH culture. We organize punk shows and fund-raisers, and are very involved in the Ottawa community. We disagree with ageism in music, and try our best to only organize all ages shows, although acknowledging that it isn't always easy. If your bands on tour and looking for a show in Ottawa we can try our best to help you out, but can't guarantee anything. We also work to make our shows a creative outlet for DIY music, to work as a place for independent thought and creative expression, and a place to talk and meet new people of like mind in comfort and tranquility. We also run a bunch of other cool DIY projects that you can check out on our projects page. In the end we want Finish What You Started to engage youth and anyone in a positive way, and we try to make sure that everything we do rules and that you walk away saying something such as "Sweet. That was good!" or "That was totally righteous!". So come hang out with us at one of our shows or listen to one of our releases! You can even bring your Dad if you want. Dads are pretty cool. Well, at least Jeff's is.
Finish What You Started does NOT work with bands who promote a negative or hateful message which includes homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, and misogyny. That garbage is lame and doesn't belong in this world!
Finish What You Started's name and logo is inspired by one of our favourite hardcore bands, Gorilla Biscuits. "It's time to stand up, for what you believe. Have no fear of your critics, be proud of the life you lead. You may be different from your friends, but if their true they'll understand. Be yourself and be the best you can. Step Out! Conformity, the easy way to be accepted, I'd rather be outcast any day. It's hard to be yourself with all the pressures coming down, it takes a strong fucking person to hold your ground."
